Reds to host the inaugural WAVL Regional Round in Albany

Reds Volleyball Club will host the first ever Regional Round of the Western Australian Volleyball League (WAVL) this Saturday night when the Reds State League Men and Women travel to Albany for Round 10 against UWA.

The Albany Regional Round will form part of the Great Southern Volley Mania; a month long showcase of volleyball in the Great Southern that includes a series of Reds Specialist Clinics and Development Sessions as well as Volleyball WA Level 2 Referee and Coach Courses, School Holiday Clinics and Coaching Discussions. The Great Southern Volley Mania is being delivered in partnership between Volleyball WA, Perth Reds Volleyball Association, Reds Volleyball Club, UWA Volleyball Club, Albany Volleyball Association and Denmark Volleyball Club.

Round 10 of the State League will feature a host of local Albany talent with Ryan Slater and Rielly Vincent lining up for Reds, while Tully Bew and Head Coach of the UWA State League Women, Nick Bew will represent UWA. Slater will make his return for Reds after training as part of the Volleyroos’ national team program in Canberra and can’t wait to play in front of his home crowd.

“After having some great opportunities to train with some world class players in Canberra, I’m excited to return to Albany. I can’t wait to get the red shirt back on and hit the court with my teammates in the special place where it all started for me,” Slater said.

Perth Reds Volleyball Association Director of Volleyball, Max Wason, who grew up in Albany is thrilled to see this event come to fruition.

“Regional Round is a massive step for Reds Volleyball Club and the sport in the Great Southern region. As the Perth Reds VA Director of Volleyball and someone who grew up in Albany, it is extremely exciting to be able to bring a State League home round, clinics and coach development opportunities to help increase the exposure of high level volleyball and coaching knowledge in the region,” Wason said.

Reds Volleyball Club President, Anthony Meo, is looking forward to seeing the State League teams in action this weekend.

“Reds Volleyball Club is incredibly proud to help deliver the Reds v UWA Regional Round as part of the Great Southern Volley Mania and can’t wait to see the teams in action on Saturday,” Meo said.

“We are very thankful for the significant support provided by Perth Reds Volleyball Association, Volleyball WA, UWA Volleyball Club and the local clubs in Denmark and Albany, who have worked incredibly well together to make this event a reality,” Meo added.

Volleyball WA is proudly supporting Regional Round as part of the Great Southern Volley Mania and VWA Participation Manager Karen Wickham highlighted the importance of these activities in the Great Southern.

Growing the Game: Max Wason leading the charge to help grow the sport in the Great Southern.

“The activities planned for June align with both our strategic regional goals and the objectives outlined in our Regional Servicing Plan (backed by DLGSC). We are thrilled to collaborate with Reds VC, UWA, and our Great Southern Clubs to enhance the skills of players, coaches, and referees in the Great Southern region, contributing to the ongoing growth of the sport.”

Denmark Volleyball Club President, Rob Perisic said the fixtures will bring an incredible benefit to the Great Southern region.

“The Denmark Volleyball Club is extremely excited about the Reds v UWA WAVL fixtures being held in our region. Our players, coaches and volunteers, who are all passionate about our sport have limited access to high quality volleyball and we are very grateful for opportunities such as this to showcase our sport,” Perisic said.

“These events not only bring together and inspire our existing community but help us grow the quality and profile of volleyball in our region. We are very lucky to have a metro club so invested in regional development and together with Reds VC, we look forward to building a strong base here in the Great Southern,” Perisic added.

Albany to Bendigo: Ryan Slater sets Rielly Vincent for a hit at the Australian Club Volleyball Championships in 2023.

Jack Sellenger Albany Volleyball Association Vice-President also highlighted the importance of these activities to help grow the sport in the Great Southern.

“The Regional Round and the associated clinics involved in this event are so important for the state of volleyball in the Great Southern. We’re hopeful that having some elite volleyball on display will inspire our own season to a higher expectation and level of gameplay. But of more importance is what this whole event can do for our younger players, who may be aspiring to reach state level themselves, and continue their volleyball journey after their time in the Great Southern has come to an end. It’s something we desperately would like to have more of,” Sellenger said.

Regional Round is being delivered by Reds Volleyball Club with the strong support of local clubs Albany Volleyball Association and Denmark Volleyball Club and is also backed by Volleyball WA, Perth Reds Volleyball Association and UWA Volleyball Club.
